After a gap of three years, readymade garment (RMG) workers have launched an agitation at Ashulia and adjoining areas on the outskirts of the capital demanding a hike in their minimum monthly wage from Tk 5,300 to Tk 15,000.
At least 55 ready-made garment (RMG) factories in Ashulia were shut down on Tuesday as thousands of workers were demonstrating for increased wages.
The announcement of the closure of the factories came at a press conference at BGMEA office in Dhaka that day afternoon.
The workers of different factories in Ashulia have been demonstrating for over nine days demanding a fresh hike in their salaries, stoppage of firing from the jobs.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Siddiqur Rahman said "The factories were closed under section 13(1) of the Labour Law. So, workers will not be paid until their joining the job,"
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself expressed deep concern and asked for finding out whether there was any conspiracy behind the latest spate of agitation. At least 25,000 workers of 26 garments factories in Ashulia abstained from work and staged demonstrations in and around their factories at Tuesday morning.
State minister for labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu has threatened the workers with tough measures if they do not return to their jobs.
Owners of garment factories are passing tough time to maintaining accord & alliance. In the meantime labor unrest, it is like "Morar Upore Karar Ga". Now it will be great challenge to obtain goal mark at 2021.
